The Broken Record Phenomenon

Fun Fact: Did you know that 95% of our thoughts are the same thoughts we think OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN?


Let that sink in for a moment....

Our brains like consistency, don't they? And our brains don't like to be told what to do. Often times we might feel like our mind is in charge of us! Or we might think that changing our thought patterns is such a far-fetched and crazy idea, because our brains are used to the same sh*t over and over again. Our brain doesn't want to think about new (scary) thoughts and ideas sometimes. It likes sitting back in the comfort of repetition and same-old, same-old!

I bring this up because this is such an important piece when we are inviting change into our lives, specifically change around our health and bodies. Remember, our brains are used to the same thoughts again and again. What kinds of things have our minds been saying to us about making changes? Maybe something along the lines of....

"I can't do this."

"I don't know how."

"I'm not good enough."

"I'm too tired."

"My body can't do that."

"I hurt too much"

"I can't control my thoughts."

....Sound familiar?

Now let's change a word or two in the above statements and see how it feels to say them or read them a second time.

"I CAN do this."

"I CAN learn how."

"I AM good enough."

"I'm FULL of energy."

"My body CAN do that."

"My body feels GOOD."

"I am IN CONTROL of my mind."

See a difference?

I hear negative statements like the ones above all the time from patients and students. They say they can't do yoga or they can't meditate, for example. In actuality, they CAN, They absolutely can try AND be successful. The mind and those reoccurring thoughts are telling them they can't. It's that same 95% of thoughts that we are thinking that are preventing us from changing.

The next time you start thinking about making changes and improving your health, and if those same thoughts start creeping in trying to discourage you, don't let them win. If you allow the recurring cycle of those thoughts to take you down with them, those thoughts become our reality. So the statements "I'm too tired" or "My body can't do that" or "I can't do this" become your reality.

Restructure your thought saying that you CAN do it and repeat it to yourself again and again. Get into a new POSITIVE pattern of thought instead of remaining inside the old!

You can make changes. You are stronger and more powerful than you realize! Now, get out there and start making some changes!! :)
